Wow, was it my imagination or was that place actually too small to host us?

Grats to Reg Crew, I was in and out of there in four minutes. I don't know you but I love you ladies. :)

Gaming was tight! Legend of the Five Rings game was neat and treated new players with kid gloves!

Art Room was a little tense....just saying. I got out of there with a choice piece though! Mael, supa-sweet!

I missed the Masquerade but saw it on BCTV!

Firefly Larp was total choke (me not them) I didn't pre-reg and a lesson was learned but the damage was irreversible. :(

A very pleasant sensation was had by the free exchance of ideas about writing, and especially cool was writers like Keven Andrew Murphy just hanging out like normal joes.

I'd pay double for that, on the whole. I even saw the owner of Other Change of Hobbit in Berkeley. That's a rare flight of birds my friends.

The Con was Go!

It's not the full range of pictures I took, because I don't believe in just vomiting the contents of my camera to the web, but just the pictures I'm generally happy with.

If you know I took a pictures of you, and it's not on the page, let me know, and I can send you the raw image.

A CALL TO DUTY! or WHAT DOES A SPACE PIRATE GOFER LOOK LIKE?

Attention, crew! BayCon needs your help (or the help of anyone else you're willing to shanghai)!

We're looking for kind-hearted, open-minded, able-bodied, furry little souls to help get this ship out of dry-dock and into the stellar waters. Gofers man the doors of function space, messenger items between staff members and generally make themselves available for errands of every sort. If the convention staff is the nerve center, the Gofers are the backbone!

More than just helping out at the convention itself, however, Gofers also help set up and tear down immediately before and after the con. this is where we're going to need LOTS of help! set up and tear down is critical to the workings of the convention!

And Gofers who complete the requisite number of volunteer hours receive a full refund of the price of their convention membership! If you'd like to help make BayCon a continued success -- or know someone else who might be interested -- please visit the official site's info page (www.baycon.org/volunteers) or email us directly at volunteer[at]baycon[dot]org.

Thanks!

May 25th: Wear The Lilac For Pratchett

author Terry Pratchett (the /Discworld/ series, /Good Omens/ with Neil Gaiman, etc., etc.) has been diagnosed with early-onset Alzheimer's Disease. Last week, he gave a speech to the Alzheimer's Research Trust Network in the UK (PDF of the full text available at http://tinyurl.com/2uggrk) wherein he announced a $1M US (500,000 GBP) contribution to the Trust. The notion hit the blogosphere that fandom could match this amount in short order; thus was born http://www.matchitforpratchett.org/ .

The following comes from the latest post to the Match It For Pratchett blog:

"In Nightwatch, the men who fought and died (and in one case, fought, died and kept on fighting) in the Revolution are remembered by the wearing of sprigs of lilac every May 25th. The online Pratchett communities have adopted May 25th as Wear The Lilac day, an unofficial holiday celebrating Pratchett's work. Now AG has taken it one step further with these fantastic Lilac Pins with the proceeds split between the American Alzheimer's Association and the Alzheimer's Research Trust."

The pins in question are available here: http://tinyurl.com/yqo54j

The more fannishly cognizant of you may recall that May 25th is Towel Day, as well ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Towel_Day ). I'd love to see the halls of the convention awash in lilacs*, towels, lilac-embroidered towels....

* As our intrepid Chief of Staff, Sabre, has reminded me elsewhere, the power is in the symbology, not the genuine article. As such, we humbly suggest and request that you limit your "wearin' of the lilac" to synthetic representations thereof.

...does anyone know where exactly it's gonna be at this new place? I've been through the structure and while I don't see an area with anything like the back balcony setup the had at the DoubleTree (didn't goto the Marriott last year) I was just wondering.

My room's already reserved but they give you an option where you want it. While I'm shooting for the 13th floor, if it were close to the party floor that'd be ideal for me and mine.

So..any ideas?

I don't sleep much, but when I do, I value it.....do I want to be on the party floor? Is it cliquish (a continuation of Birds of a Feather) or what?

I am here still in California still recovering from Baycon and leaving tomorrow.back to Texas. I can not wait to be home. The hotel was nice once you got to your room and settled down the Double tree was flat and you could see alot of people. Thos hotel had everything everywhere and looked like a famous artist known for his stairway drawing designed this hotel with the help of Sarah Winchester. All in all it was a great con and I had a great time at the Con. EXHAUSTED, broke, and happy to be going home tomorrow. Thanks to everyone that made this con great and made it have the great enregy it had.

schedule for Gaming at BayCon 2007

I know that many of you find your way in to the Gaming rooms at some point durring the convention, and so I am going to give you all a sneak preview of what we have in store for the little corner of the con that I call home:

Friday 6:00pm - Cribbage Tournament
Cribbage is a game who's origins stretch back to Charles the First's England and to this day is the only card game that is legal to play for money in english pubs. Simple math, cunning strategy, and a measure of luck will be needed if you want to come out on top in this traditional card game.

Friday 6:00pm - Carabande Grand Prix
Gentlemen, start your engines! Warm up your carrom flicking fingers and join us as the race is about to begin! Carabande is a fast paced game of hand eye coodination that pits your puck scooting skills against up to 7 other players in a road race that would make the boys at Lemans or Daytona stand up and take notice.
We will be running 2 rounds. A qualifying round in which I will be setting up both of my sets and accomidating up to 16 players followed by "The Big Race" in which the top 4 from each qualifier will square off in one massive race!

Friday 9:00pm - Teenagers from Outer Space
Title: Who’s got spirit?
Welcome to your frist day of galaxy high! If you thought that life at the edge of the galaxy is hard now, add the fact that you are a freshman in high school (The proms, gym class, homeroom and all). Add the fact that your school spirit is missing... Literally (The school spirit is what keeps you school afloat in space)! How will the new kids save the school? How will they survive their first encounter with the sports teams? How will they handle their first unsupervised encounter with a member of the opposite sex? Will they find the lost spark that made there school the best in the galaxy, or will the school plummet into a star just to spite them? In the mad world of GALAXY HIGH, anything can happen!

Saturday 1:30am - Late Night Talisman game
Old school gamers will remember this one: Back in the day, a little company from England called "Games Workshop" actually produced games that didn't involve hundreds of dollars of miniatures per player to play. Games like Chaos Marauders, Space Crusade, and the crown jewel of their line Talisman! Come and take a trip down memory lane and play a little Talisman, The Magical Quest Game, with us. All of the expansions (except Talisman Dragons) will be in play.

Saturday 11:00am - Heroscape
Imagine the Greatest Battle of All Time, when all the heroes and warriors of history and fantasy converge on a battlefield you design. Intense, but easy-to-learn game play: heroes’ actions are governed by stats on army cards indicating movement, range, armor, attack powers and more.

Saturday 2:00pm - Loony Labs Zendo Tournament
From the Mystic East come the Zen Masters of Loony Labs (would you believe Eastern Seaboard?). They have sent to us a man of great wisdom (o.k. he's the only one of them with a Kimono). He has traveled far from his homeland (in the East Bay... I told you they were from the east), to bring us a challenge! Find your way to true enlightenment through the arrangement of little plastic pyramids! So bring your Buddha Nature down to Gaming and see if you have what it takes to find Nirvana.

Saturday 5:00pm - Munchkin Tournament
Strap on your Boots of Butt-Kicking, grab your Hammer of Kneecapping and come join our Munchkin Tournament. It's a card game which is a lot like role-playing games, but without all those unimportant bits like character development and plot. The goal is simple: kill monsters and take their stuff. Beginners encouraged, being a Munchkin isn't a skill, it's a state of mind. And remember: in the end, there can be only one (and they get all the loot)!

Sunday 11:00 am - Warhammer 40,000 Combat Patrol Tournament
"In the grim future, there is only war"... but what's the good of a grim future if you can't have a little fun with it? We will be hosting a 400pt modified RTT using the "Combat Patrol" rules and scenario. A number of armies will be available for loan if you can't bring your own.

Sunday 2:00 pm: Loony Labs Fluxx Tournament
At the beginning of it, Fluxx appears to be a simple card game. You draw a card from the deck, and play a card from your hand. Simple enough, right? Well, that was the first player's turn, by the time it gets back around to them again the rules are almost guaranteed to have changed at least twice, if not more. Come and see if your goals can be achieved! Will the winner fly a rocket to the moon? Will they achieve Death by Chocolate? These questions and more will be answered, so be there!

Sunday 5pm - Blood Bowl
Blood Bowl is the game in which Orcs, Elves, Trolls, Humans and many other fantastical creatures participate in the sport of football. Take the role of a Blood Bowl coach looking to work his team of armoured and psychotic players up through the leagues and then on to win the fabled Blood Bowl Championship itself!

Time TBA - Gloom
"Terrified by topiary? Menaced by mice? Perturb by pudding? Put on your Victorian hats for a game of family disaster and death. Make your family as miserable as possible, while trying to cheer up your opponents families, before offing characters in the most creative ways possible. Aliteration and a good sense of the grim absurd reccomended in this game for players 10 and up."

Time TBA - Robo Rally
Amaze your friends! Astound complete strangers! Try desperately to keep the conveyor belt that you're standing on from dumping you into a bottomless pit! Join us in this madcap romp through a factory where the map is easily as likely to kill you as your opponents.

As much as I love baycon, I can't do the weekend membership (and I really want to go to the pannels this year). How much is it for a day and/or evening badge?

Thanks!

more Rumors about baycon

I heard a interesting rumor from a source I have 0 confidence in, But I thought I’d see if anyone has heard anything similar.

It goes that the city of SJ is pissed at the double tree for losing Baycon. Evidently the business revenues to local business is over 1 million total. The rumor goes on to say the city council complained to the hotel management.

Any one heard this one yet?
Any comments?

I read it on the internet so it must be true :-)

So I was looking through the program for this years con and I noticed that they are not doing Rocky Horror Picture show.

What is up with that? People had a great old time last year and I for one was hoping for it to be back this year.

Maybe it just hasnt made the current program?

If anyone knows anything about this, I would love to know.

Thanks and see this weekend.

Mal (Firefly) from BayCon Needed for ComiCon Masquerade

Hi everyone,

I just got invited to join a costume group (one of the winners at BayCon) to compete in the Masquerade at ComiCon in July. Our theme will be Firefly.

We are looking for the person who was wearing a Mal costume at BayCon to join us. Anyone know who that was?

Or is there anyone else who might be willing to play the part with us and have a costume for the role? Let me know!

I've finally got the review up on The Drink Tank (http://efanzines.com/DrinkTank/index.htm) issue #25 and Issue 26 will be up by Friday at the latest with another set of reviews and Kent Brewster's photos.
There are a lot of great LJ posts, which can be found by going through technorati.com and searching for BayCon.
So far, I've found nothing better than two photos: one of Maya, the adorable Mermaid, and one of a group of ladies on a leash.

Well, it's over. I had a blast and those that I ran into seemed to have a good time too. My big ole nearly 4k word review of BayCon will be up on eFanzines.com (http://efanzines.com/DrinkTank/index.htm) in the next couple of days. It's issue 25 that'll have the review.
Issue 26 will be other people's view of BayCon 2005. If anyone wants to write anything, and it could be a dozen words or a short novel, I'd love to have it. I won't be putting the issue out until next Wednesday, so you can send stuff to me any time between now and Tuesday night. Drop mail to garcia@computerhistory.org.
Thanks

Hi! I have one roommate for Baycon, and I'm seeking two more. The
two of us are pretty easygoing and openminded, though my friend is
fairly new to science fiction fandom. I would ask though that any
potential roomies be 18 or older.

Looking over the website, I noticed that they have yet to put up a suggestions for programming page. And so, I thought if any of y'all have an idea, post it and I'll make sure programming is made aware.

I've got two great panel ideas that I'm pretty sure will be done: So You've Decided to be Evil (with the author of So You Wanna Be A Villain, my pal Neil Zawacki) and one on Science Fiction and Sports.

So, the guests who will be doing paneling got their first schedules today (or late last night)
This should indicate that we'll have a list on the website of programming this weekend or early next)
My scheds much smaller than last year (this year 8, last year 13)
Though if you go to only 1 panel this year, make it Remember MonkeyCons Past with Me, Frank Wu and Jay Lake.

OK, I know I'll be running around (I'm MC the Masquarade and Meet the Guests, for example) but I thought we might make a little list of who's gonna be where to fascilitate hellos.

There's the Chairman's Poker Game, whcih I will be playign in (until Michael Saladi takes all my chips, as he did the last two times I played in the Chairman's game) and that'll be a fun time, I'm sure. I'll also be doing a lot of panels, though I won't have a list for a week or so at teh soonest.

Where are others like to be? I know we have one person who's always at the Info desk. What about those others who'll be working? Any reg folks? Green Room? Others?

Why? Cause dat's da name a' next yee-ah's con*, dat's why! Who wants ta know, hah?

Now, line it up, ya mugs! Or Joey Bags & Cheech, dey'll be comin' by fer a 4 AM "bizness meetin'," capisce?

**********************************************************

(*It's definitely the theme, and so far, also the title.)

What's really amusing to me is that they decided this, *then* asked me for ideas to keep it on theme... because I'm a half-Sicilian kid from a "mafia bedroom neighborhood" in Brooklyn, and my cousin (who, thank gods, died when I was 2 months old) pretty much *invented* the modern Mafia. Guy named Salvatore Carmelo Lucania, but you probably know him better (if you know your mafia history at all) as "Charlie Lucky" Luciano...

This... should be fun. O;-)

Have folks been getting their membership numbers in the mail?

I'm helping a friend get into the writer's workshop, I e-mailed
off his submission but the May 1st deadline to send in his membership number is fast apporaching and he hasn't gotten anything yet (he registered last year)

I've tried the online forums but can't seem to log in. I've signed
up twice with different name/password/emails and both times
after veryfing my account through the email link the site will not
let me log in, declaring that I've "specified an incorrect username or
invalid account" This happens even if I cut and paste the information.

Does anyone here know anything (or better yet, anyone) who
can help with this. More than anything I need either the membership
number for Ed Monroe *or* some assurance from the Writer's Workshop folks that this unavoidable delay is ok. I never got a
confirmation from them on the submission, as a matter of fact,
but neither did it bounce...

7 Weeks left

OK, with seven weeks left, Baycon is approaching much too quickly.
Here are a few things
1) Jay Lake, myself and Frank Wu have all been working on a devilish scheme. Some of it will appear in the programme guide, some of it in my fanzine The Drink Tank on eFanzines.com. Trust me, it will be entertaining.
2) I'm planning on running 2 special issues of The Drink Tank on BayCon, one that will be published before the Con and will feature a few words from the Guests of Honour and anything anyone else would like to write on BC. If you've got a story or idea, lemme know, the odds are pretty good that I'll print it. The second issue will come out the day after and will feature highlights, a full review by at least two of the folks there (and anyone else who wants to drop something in) and a look at what it takes to be Toastmaster.
3) I think we should have a Tribe meet-and-greet at some point. I'll volunteer my suite for one night, maybe an hour long thing in the down time on Saturday or Sunday.
I'll keep y'all posted
Chris

OK, after a while of tryign to get the rumours out of the way, it's official that Robert J. Sawyer had to cancel for BayCon. It's a shame, but it happens. They are currently looking for replacements (and the leading name mentioned would make me VERY happy if they get him) and should have an official announcement shortly (perhaps as soon as LosCon this weekend.)
But, still appearing, are myself, Frank Wu, Kevin and Andy.

greetings to all!
i've been passionate about speculative fiction as long as i can remember, but i've never attended a convention. i've been advised by a few people that this con is a great place for someone like me to start. luckily for me, i'm located in the sf bay area.
i'd love to hear any advice anyone here might have for me about convention events, fun places to focus, or whatever else you think i might find helpful.
thanks, i'll be looking forward to a great experience!!

Hi. I gave a panel at Further Confusion this past weekend that I think would also go well at Baycon (it's not a fur-specific panel). To whom should I write about possibly scheduling this, or is there still time to set up new events?

Now, here is the official line-up for BayCon (minus any last minute special guests, and I know they are trying for at least two)
Writer Guest of Honour: Jay Lake (Greetings From Lake Wu, winner fo the 2004 Campbell Award and has been accused of being a look-alike of mine)
Artist is still Frank Wu, Fans are still Andy and Kevin, and I'm still Toastmaster.
That's all.

There's been a little movement in the Guests for next year, which is also part of the reason they've not updated the website yet.

Robert J. Sawyer is still the Writer Guest of Honour, Emperor Kevin Roche and Andy Trembley as Fan Guests of Honour, myself, Christopher J. Garcia as Toastmaster, and now Hugo Award-winnign Fan Artist Frank Wu as Artist Guest of Honor. No word on other Guests, but I'm guessing there'll be at leat one special guest.

So, I've got a thing of Tribe Stickers for us, but I've thought that it would be a nice thing if folks let folks know where we may run into each other at con.
I'm on a ton of panels (Come see A Dead Fish, 5 Bucks and a Time Machine) and can usually be found wandering the Overland Route, watching the side fo the Hotel during Late Night, and at the Meet the Guests and Charity Casino on Friday.
I'm not sure what I'll look like, as I am, and this is for real, actually on a make-over show on Wednesday and have no clue what they are planning.

OK, there is a tradition in teh various tribes that all members must introduce themselves. And now that there is another member, I'm not just talking to me.
So, here goes...
I'm Chris. I've been going to BayCon off and on since the first one(when I was 8 or so) and have been doing panels and boffers pretty much every year. I also get to host the Trailer Park, which is fun.
I actually get to talk with the organisers on a regular basis, so any news I get, I'll put up here

Some Recommendations

So, having gone over the sched with a fine toothed comb and talked to a bunch of my friends, I am hardily recommending these programme items for the Con, which starts in a mere 9 days.
1) Friday 02:30 pm - 04:00 pm: Cedar Minions, Lackeys, and Sidekicks - Esther Friesner, Irene Radford and Howard Hendrix are all great panelists, but throw in the whacky Jane Mailander and you've got a great panel.

2) Friday 04:00 pm - 05:30 pm: Monterey 1984 + 20 - Brad Lyau is a fan historian and a good one. This panel has three of my fave BayCon regulars (Hendrix, G. David Nordley and Ken Wharton) and Scott Rice is always entertaining.

3) Friday 05:30 pm - 07:00 pm: Carmel HAL 9000 for President - Tom Galloway is a very funny fellow. Hugh Daniel may be the most entertaining subversive known to man. I'm moderating and the topic couldn't be more appropriate for the year.

4) Meet the Guests and the Charity Casino are always fun.

5) Saturday 11:30 am - 01:00 pm: Pine Mars Through History - A HUGE panel full of great speakers. I've seen Seth Shosktak and Bridget Landry do this panel alone and it was really good. Throw in Nordley, Kay Tracey and Jim Terman and you've got the most knowledgable and well-spoken panel I've ever seen programmed.

6) Saturday 01:00 pm - 02:30 pm: Cedar He's Dead, Jim: Grieving for Our Lost Shows - Another of my panels, but these always feature fun debate among the panelists and the audience. Come see me and Ben Yalow disagree most intensely on just about everything! Thrill to David Bratman and Johnathan Fresmire! Wanda Haight and Brad Lyau will be there too! Last year's version of this panel at Philcon was a foot away from a fistfight at times.

7) Saturday 02:30 pm - 05:30 pm: Skyview Lounge Dr. Destructo Shows You How Things (Used to) Work - Hugh is great and this is the perfect panel for kids.

8) Saturday 03:15 pm - 04:00 pm: San Jose Reading: Howard Hendrix - Not only is Howard an excellent speaker, but he is one of the most underrated Hard SF writers working today. His reading last year was the single most evocative piece of fiction I've ever heard. He's up there with Robert J. Sawyer.

9) Saturday 04:00 pm - 05:30 pm: Fir/Oak Trailer Park - I'm not hosting this year, and I've been told that it will be much improved. Looking at the early list, I gotta agree.

10) Sunday 11:30 am - 01:00 pm: Fir/Oak Real Nanotech -- Nanoengineered Materials for Spintronics Applications - Kevin Roche is an IBM guy and has never failed me in any panel I've seen him on (though once, the two of us were on a panel with Richard Foss adn couldn't get a word in edgewise)

11) Sunday 04:00 pm - 05:30 pm: Pine Reading: Michael Swanwick - GOH reading. He's entertaining.

12) Sunday 05:30 pm - 07:00 pm: Cedar A Shot Rang Out - If you've been to one before, you know they tend to be fantastic. Lee Martindale and Hilary Ayer are great, and Jane Mailander is the legend of the A Shot Rang Out world.

13) Sunday 05:30 pm - 07:00 pm: Fir/Oak King Arthur - The Swored master from the new King Arthur movie is coming with swords. Man-O-Man, that should be good.

14) Monday 10:45 am - 11:30 am: San Jose Reading: Lori White - It's an early Monday reading (I got stuck with this timeslot last year) but Lori is such a great reader that it's well-worth draggin' out of bed.

15) Monday 02:30 pm - 04:00 pm: Monterey Tiki Panel - What's more fun that Tiki?

Anyone got any other suggestions?
CHris

Here's the news I mentioned in an earlier post: Toastmaster for 2005's edition of BayCOn will be...me.
That's right. I was asked, and I have accepted the honour of being BayCon's MC for 2005.
As far as other GoH's, I'm not entirely sure. I've heard some name (Fan GoHs ebign contumer-type folks, a writing team as Writer and Science guest of honour, and perhaps a MAJOUR artist as Art GoH, and if it is who I've heard they are talking about, there is no better choice) and as soon as I am certain, I'll post info here.

So, I have been thinking that it would be a good idea to try and find some method for IDing various Tribers at Con. Anyone have an idea? A sticker or ribbon could work, but there are so many stickers and ribbons that it might get confused.
Any thoughts?

And *would* anyone?
